KIRKSVILLE, MO - Kirksville is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Ford City, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Kirksville post office was established in 1872 and closed in 1951. The town's name comes from Colonel George A. Kirkpatrick who laid out the town on land donated by his wife Frances to establish a school system within it. By 1880 Kirksville had two churches, three schools, two mills and twenty-four residents with one store running until 1907 when it closed because of an economic recession that struck the area hard. During World War I (1914-18) Kirksville served as an army training center for local farmers supplying soldiers with food and munitions needed for combat overseas. In 1919 Kirksville became home to the world’s largest machine shop used to produce shells for American forces fighting in World War I by building fifty miles of hosepipe pipeline under the battlements of Fort Riley near present day Topeka Kansas so cannonballs could not be Fired intoKansas without causing environmental damage
