By 1849 they had become a important transportation hub for goods flowing into and out of northern Missouri and Illinois via Ottawa Creek crossing over the Mississippi River at Vandalia Junction upstream from Kirksville. This trade route facilitated many early agricultural settlements within today’s boundaries including Clarksburg, West Plains, Mt Vernon, Carthage Heights and more recently Valparaiso Springs and Bancroft Landing on both sides of Ottawa Creek Bridge just east of present day downtown Kirksville.
