Kirksville is a town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. It once was the county seat of Warren County but has since been replaced by Rolla. Kirksville is located on the confluence of the Iowa and Kansas Rivers. The first permanent settlement in what is now Kirksville was made in 1814 by Nicholas Kirkpatrick and his family from Kentucky. They built a log cabin on an outcropping near present-day Kirksville and named it after their home state, Kentucky. For many years, this was the only community inWarren County; however, by 1870 there were also settlements at Antioch (1827), Carthage (1829), Clearwater (1830), and Winchester (1831). In 1871, John Witherspoon opened a wagon ferry across the Iowa River at present-day Rolla to connect with farmers east of Kirksville. This early transportation backbone ofRolla helped support local commerce during late 19th century when goods were unloaded onto wagons then transported to Rolla for sale or shipment back East. In 1874, Ulysses S Grant visited Kirksville while campaigning for reelection as President of the United States and noted its strategic location on both sides of theIowa River – making it strategically important for military operations against Native Americans living along that border. Soon after Grant's visit, many settlers realized how advantageous having a river crossing would be for trade purposes and began to arrive from various parts of America to locate hereabouts. In 1875, voters approved creation of Warren County from portions of Clay and Johnson Counties; Kircsville became its new county seat. During World War II much activity occurred within wartime boundaries including manufacturing plants set up within town limits like Alcoa's Paints plant which produced aluminum cans and other war materials while Allied soldiers barracks were erected within town limits like Hutchinson Barracks which housed American troops until they could be relieved elsewhere during hostilities ended in 1945. After World War II ended most residents left KirksVILLEand most buildings have been demolished except one old post office building still standing today used as a business center
