Kirksville, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by Isaac Kirksville and his family. The Kirksville post office was established in 1838, and the first settler to arrive in Kirksville was Gideon Green. In 1839, the Kirksville Arsenal was built to produce cannons for the War of 1812. The post office served as a courthouse from 1840 until it closed in 1906. The arsenal building still stands, and it is now used as a museum. The town became an important center during the Civil War because its location on the main Union supply route made it an ideal staging ground for operations against Confederate forces. During the war, Kirksville played a major role in skirmishes and battles such as Battle of Winchester that resulted in significant casualties on both sides. After the war, many businesses were founded here including a grocery store, cotton gin, railroad station, sawmill, flour mill and bank. Some of these businesses remain active today such as Bearden’s Furniture & House Museum which opened its doors in 1984. Kirschvile also experienced some minor but significant Changes during its history including becoming home to one of the first high schools west of the Mississippi River (now called Truman High School) and being named one of “10 Best Places To Live In America” by Forbes magazine in 1990.
