Kennett is a small town in northwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Kennett were Native Americans who hunted and collected game around the area today known as Springfield Township. They were followed by English settlers who arrived in 1671 and founded what is now called Lexington after their home village in England. In 1824, a group of Methodist missionaries from Kentucky came to Springfield Township and started a church there which would eventually become the First Baptist Church of Kennett (FBCK). A post office was established here on October 15, 1825, and named for JohnKennett, one of the early missionary pastors from Kentucky. In 1827, a railroad was built through Springfield Township connecting it with St Louis; this led to an increase in business and development here which continues to this day. The first school building was erected here in 1829; it burned down but was rebuilt soon afterwards and became known as the FBCK School Annexe building until 1949 when it moved into its current location on Main Street. When Kansas Territory was created in 1861, much of central Missouri became part of that new territory including Kennett; however, due to political subdivision reforms instituted by Kansas Territorial Governor George Armstrong Smith two years later, Kennett remained within Missouri until 1865 when it joined Union County along with other eastern parts of Missouri under General Order No. 9270-65 (the order organizing all Ulysses S Grant’s Indian Territory possessions). The community rapidly grew during Reconstruction following the Civil War; by 1870, businesses had been established along Main Streetincluding not one but two grocery stores and four cotton ginners employing forty-five men/women employees total ferrying goods between points east of Hannibal and west ofSpringfieldTownship lines respectively). This growth continued into the 20th century with various buildings being added to Main Street such as an ice cream parlor opened in 1923 which remains operational today (it also hosts monthly book sales) while other businesses have closed such as a gas station which closed its doors for good in 2002 after over fifty years serving customers primarily through convenience store visits rather than retail sales In 1957 they began offering bus service within their town limits providing transportation withinsthe community for residents who could not or did not want to walk or bike; this service continues today though fares range from $2 per ride up to $10 per trip depending on route selected As suburbanization increased throughoutStLouis County beginning around 1970,-Kennett saw increasing attention from developers seeking properties near schools or Interstate highways making access difficult if not impossible without special permits or bribes - resulting in significant property values appreciation during this time period culminating with incorporation into StLouis cityhood status effective July 1st2002 . Today muchofthe original commercial district has been replaced by high-density housing developments althoughMain Street still retains some rough edges evident especially around intersections where traffic signals are located
Kennett was founded in 1839 by George Kennett and his wife, Rebecca. The town became a center for the area's agriculture, and it remains a center today for that industry. Kennett is also home to the Missouri State Capitol, as well as many other government buildings.
