Kennett is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It was named for George Kennett, a Surveyor General of the Missouri Territory in 1821. The first Europeans to visit Kennett were French traders and fur- Traders brought over by Captain Jacques Marquette and his party on their journey from Quebec City to explore the Upper Great Lakes in 1673. After a journey of more than three months they reached the village of Kaskaskia on November 10, 1673. They built Fort Chartres on the north bank of the river where it enters the Mississippi River about two miles distant from what is now Kennett. For many years this post served as an important trading depot for both Illinois and Missouri settlers. In 1821, surveyor general George Kennett surveyed much of present-day Missouri for Congress under President James K. Polk’s order “to promote internal improvements within our limits” The resulting plat map of that area shows that part of present-day Kennett lying within current Randolph County east of I-435 (now US Highway 66). Kennetts location made him ideal for developing this new land, as he had been a longtime resident and citizen of St Louis since 1792 when he moved there from Maryland with his family after purchasing land near present day Ferguson Landing on the riverfront just east of downtown St Louis. In 1800 he became one of ten citizens who purchased shares in the First National Bank adjacent to what is now Jefferson Street between Randolph and Franklin streets in downtown St Louis In 1825 he donated land at what is now Third Street and Randolph Streets west side facing Randolph to establish Park which still features today as one half mile square surrounded by high brick walls with trees inside
Kennett was a small town in western Missouri, located on the Arkansas River. The post office at Kennett was established in 1853 and remained in operation until it closed in 1923. The town was originally called "Moses" and was renamed "Kennett" after General John A. Kennett, who served as commander of the Department of Missouri during the American Civil War. The first store in Kennett opened in 1853 and continued to operate until 1923.
