Kennett, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is named after General George Kennett who fought in the American Civil War and served as brigadier general in the Union army. The first settler in Kennett was James Aiken who came to the area in 1836. Aiken homesteaded on what is now known as Main Street and built a log cabin which still stands today. Another early settler was John Hays who arrived around 1840. He built a cabin on what is now called Second Street and operated a farm until he died in 1847. A post office called Kennett was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1861, General George McClellan ordered his army to move from Cairo, Illinois to Springfield so that he could be ready for battle against Confederate forces under Robert Eason at Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg Maryland. The military column marched through Kennett on their way northward and stopped at nearby Grovetown for dinner on July 9th 1861 before continuing their march northeastward across Missouri into Arkansas Territory (now Oklahoma). It didn't take long for word of General McClellan's presence to spread through the small town; within two hours of arriving there were several gunshots heard coming from inside one of the local stores! That same day Ware men found an abandoned wagon train parked behind some trees just outside town limits-flags had been flown up all over Virginia City by citizens warning other settlers about McClellan's approaching force! soon after that news reached both sides of the state line people began evacuating towards eastern Kentucky and Tennessee! Ultimately more than three hundred residents within five miles of mainstreet lost their lives when Confederate artillery opened fire upon retreating Union troops during July 11th 1861 while they were marching back home... overall more than one thousand people perished during that fateful day when hostilities ended only days later with Confederate victory over Union forces at Antietam Creek! Though much has changed since then including increased development within walking distance of Kennett proper (including new housing developments) many aspects of life remain much as they did during those early days - such as subsistence farming practices which relied heavily upon corn harvesting seasons leading up to Lenten services; hunting & fishing opportunities available due to ample open land available throughout central Missouri; strong community spirit which helped support tight-knit social networks; traditional values such as hard work ethic & selfless service ingrained into locals' psyches all continue unchanged even centuries after events transpired
