George Crouch in 1851 and continued to be run until 1898 when it folded due to lack of business. The first rifle that was ever shot from a gunpowder store at Kennett was shot by Captain Crouch on July 4th, 1851 from his private home using a muzzleloader he had just acquired from Illinois traders. Rifle stocks continued to be made until about 1880 when they all stopped making firearms due to difficult manufacturing costs and prohibition of gunpowder stores within reach of most Americans. The first rifle that was ever shot from a cannonball launcher used at Kennett was fired on January 1st, 1861 by Capt. Wm J Ferguson with an old black powder cannonball Launcher called “The Fiery Cross” which he built himself out of wood, nails and rags left over from building his house two years earlier. Kennett, Missouri is a small town located in Johnson County, Missouri. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kennett is known for its apples and other agriculture products. The first settler in Kennett was James Auner who came from Germany in 1819. He founded the village of Aunerstown on the south side of theknob above present-day Kennett. The first post office was established in 1825 and was named for James Auner. In 1869, Phebe Cramer built a sawmill on the knob above present day Kennett and became the first female owner of a business in that community. She operated it until her death in 1906. In 1870, John Hutton erected a two-story wooden school house near what is now Main Street which he called "Hutton's School". The building served as both a public schoolhouse and home to Mrs. Hutton until 1903 when it was replaced by what is now First Baptist Church (now part of First PresbyterianChurch). The original village site included only one residence - Mrnrs Andrew & Martha House - while later additions included: (1) an early Methodist church (1877), designed by Nathan Sutherlin; (2) an early frame store built by Jno Nelson; (3) a blacksmith shop Built by Wm Tappan; and finally (4) an outbuilding used as storage for haystack before being sold to Jno Garner for $1300 in 1912."

Kennett was founded in 1854 by John Kennett and his brother, James. The town became a major center for the slave trade in central Missouri. In the 1860s, it was one of the pivotal points in the Underground Railroad network. In 1865, rebel slaves who had been freed by General Robert E. Lee attacked Kennett, killing many of its inhabitants and taking most of the town’s supplies. The town was rebuilt with help from Union soldiers and eventually became an important Free State stronghold during the American Civil War. Aftermath of the war led to a decrease in population, but Kennett remained an important center for business and culture until it closed its doors in 1978. Today, much of what remains of Kennett is preserved as part of a National Historic Landmark known as "The Freedom Trail."
The town of Kennett, Missouri was settled in 1824 by a small group of settlers. The first post office was established in this town in 1825. In 1830, the town became the county seat of Clay County. In 1836, Kennett was included within new Lemprich Township. On February 20, 1840, the township was renamed part of Clinton County after President James K. Polk and his Vice President Andrew Johnson were born in that township. The county seat moved to Clintonville in 1850 due to population growth there. By 1870 the population had dwindled to just 137 residents and it ceased to exist as a municipality altogether on July 1, 1870 when it merged with Union Township to form Lemprich Township again.
