Kennett is a town in Newton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,763 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in Newton County and was formed from parts of Clinton and Purdytown. The first settlers in Kennett were David Cook and his family who arrived in 1837. The Townsite Reserve was surveyed on March 16, 1840 by John Sibley and named for General George Washington Kennett (1775-1838). A post office called Kennett was established in 1843, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened at 339 Main Street on November 10, 1845 by J.B. Henshaw & Son under the name "The Store of David Cook". In 1861 Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech from the steps of the courthouse which introduced him to many of the people living in Kennett including Drury Colfax who became his friend and political advisor during his time as President. In 1865 Confederate General Sterling Price advanced through town on horseback when headed towards Springfield losing control over one end of Main Street whereupon a crowd had gathered to prevent him from reaching town center however he continued on foot into what would later become known as Price's Valley which today contains several businesses including Cottonwood Coffee Co., Old Spirit Saloon & Grille, Gouda Baking Co., prices Pizza Hut - presently Pizza Hut Express - as well as two homes that are used as museum exhibits: One features replicas of early settler home tools while another house has been remodeled into a Bed & Breakfast with guest rooms overlooking main street. In 1870 Jesse Fellows built an old millstone gristmill on Goose Creek near present day White Sands Road which still stands today providing flour for most local businesses such as Mrs. Willcox's Bakery until 1974 when it closed down due to water damage after five years without being able to get new water tanks or pumps installed because government money had already been given away for that purpose In 1979 three small businessmen pooled their money together to buy an old farmhouse located off Highway 20 about four miles north of town renamed Park Place Apartments following complaints from residents about noise coming from that property so they renovated it into apartments with indoor tennis courts/pool/spa facilities complete with air conditioning The apartments closed down after only three years but reopened again ( briefly ) under different ownership late last year before shutting down again this past weekend due to high humidity levels . By 1910 there were over 100 businesses operating within just two blocks wide radius making up what is now known simply as "Kennett." Most businesses operated out front where storefronts could be seen dominating much vehicular traffic heading Into or Out Oftown services or rest areas like Walmart Supercenter across I-64 almost always having ample parking available nearby should customers need additional storage capacity back home although public transportation is available within walking distance via bus or pedestrian mall walkways leading all around town center

Mechanicsburg quickly became an important commercial center due to its access to railroads and its close proximity to both St. Louis and Kansas City. The town also grew rapidly as residents began buying land around it for agricultural purposes.
