Kennett, Missouri is a small town in northwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Olathe Micropolitan Statistical Area. Kennett was founded in 1836 by Captain James Wilkinson and his family and has been inhabited since that time. The town originally consisted of just Wilkinson's house and two other buildings on the present day corner of Fourth and Main Streets. In 1854, John A. Cowles donated land to the town for development, which led to its growth over the years. By 1870, Kennett had a school and several businesses including a hotel, grocery store, post office, doctor's office and brewery. In 1886, the village of Kennett merged with nearby Olathe to form one larger community known as Kennett-Olathe Township. Today much of what once made up Kennett are gone but there are still some reminders of that time such as the old schoolhouse which is now used as a garage or museum; as well as some wonderful historic homes like Hickory Hill which sits on top of an hill overlooking downtown Kennett; or Plantation House which was built in 1892 for General William Tecumseh Sherman during his visit to Missouri during the American Civil War. From all these memories it can be easy to see how important Kennet was in Missouri history from before there were any towns here at all!
