Kennett is home to America's first high capacity kit station, built in 1967. The original kit station offered 10 megawatts of power. Today, Kennett's high capacity kit station offers 100 megawatts of power. Kennett was one of the first communities to install large-scale solar energy systems and has become an advocate for renewable energy technologies. In 1836, John Witherspoon bought land here and started an ox cart cemetery which still exists today (cemetery entrance is located off of Highway 144). In 1847, John Schieffer founded a grist mill on Hanford Road which operated until 1906 when it went out of business. The first post office called Kennett opened in 1854; it was discontinued in 1865 because no letters could be sent to remote villages with Bentonville being closer to receive them. In 1861, Confederate troops under General Sterling Price burned down two houses east of town while retreating from Union forces during the American Civil War. This event helped start what is now known as "The Battle of Kennett" which lasted all day and resulted in more than 60 casualties on both sides

In 1827, Adam Funk built a cabin here and started farming. He also raised livestock and manufactured goods for sale in Springfield. By 1840, about 20 families lived here and operated several businesses: a store, a cotton gin, two gristmills (one by Funk and one by his son), two saddlesmiths' shops (the first such shop in Missouri), four houses, three churches (First Baptist Church and First Methodist Church both founded in 1841), four schools (four grades: primary school; second grade; third grade; fourth grade), two mills that ground cornmeal for flour and meal for baking bread - one powered by an engine made of three posts with iron wheel belts which turned on rollers driven by horses or dogs - six hogsheads of oil per day - three tanning sheds - three barns - twelve head of cows - one horse
