Kennett was born on a small farm in central Missouri in 1857. The family had five children, three of whom died in infancy. Reverend John Kennett, who would later become an Episcopal priest and the first bishop of Springfield, Illinois, was their father. After graduating from college in 1881, Reverend Kennett moved to St. Louis and became pastor of First Presbyterian Church there. He married Sarah Manning in 1892 and they had two more children. In 1902, Reverend Kennett was appointed pastor of the new Methodist church in town (now known as Independence), which he served until his death in 1945. Reverend John's widow continued to serve as pastor until her own death in 1951; she is buried at the churchyard there with her husband. The Reva Ewing CookeKnellman Library & Archives at the University of Missouri at Rolla has been named after Mrs. Kennett and her late husband. The Reva Ewing CookeKnellman Library & Archives at the University of Missouri at Rolla was founded by Mrs. Kennett's granddaughter Rebecca Kapp Collins-Newcomb on October 1st, 2002 as a tribute to her great-grandmother Reva Ewing CookeKnellman (1863-1951). It is located on top of what used to be the old Masonic Lodge building on Main Street in town (now known as Independence). The library houses over 100 items from both written and oral history collections dating back to 1800s when Reverend John Kennett served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church hereabouts. Some are rare or unusual examples from that era still extant including a deed for land totaling 640 acres found among other interesting documents unearthed during recent renovations inside the building! From its beginnings it has been goal(ed) by Rebecca Kapp Collins-Newcomb herself throughout its growth that this important resource for education should be open daily to all students regardless Of age, race or gender! Though built mainly for research purposes only since its opening last Fall semester 2007 even though we have growing staff member(s) working full time+we truly hope one day this wonderful gift will also be open 7 days per week!!!
