Kennett is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is located about 25 miles east of St. Louis and about 50 miles north of Springfield. The population was 2,100 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in Kennett were the Lenape Indians who came from Canada in the 17th century. They built a trading post on a bluff overlooking the river where they developed trade with other tribes in what is now southern Illinois and northern Indiana. In 1821, General James Kapp established Fort Beecher near Kennett and began an exploration of what would become Missouri that year. He named this new territory for General Beecher’s son-in-law, James Kapp’s brother-in-law, Colonel John Kennett (1762-1823), who had helped him gain possession of land including present day Kennett County. In 1824, Colonel John Kennett organized the First Baptist Church in town which soon grew into one of the most prominent churches in Whitley County. The church was dedicated on July 1, 1825 by Governor Thomas J. Ferguson Jr.. In 1827, he donated land to build a Mechanics Institute which later became known as Eastern State University (now Missouri State University). A school district was organized around 1870 and named after President Andrew Johnson – then education superintendent George Washington Carver – when it purchased land south of town from Colonel John Kennett for $1 per acre. The first teachers were Mrs Pettit and Mr Goode; Classes started on September 15th 1870 before being moved to their present location due to lack of space at nearby Union High School until 1893 when it moved again due to construction on what is now Central Avenue NW in downtown Kennett! A fire destroyed all but one building on campus on November 6th 1888 so classes continued out of doors until January 1893 when they were finally relocated back into buildings! In 1907, Dr Wm Hays founded Western Mercy Hospital which provides care for patients from surrounding towns including Bennettsville as well as providing ambulance service to rural areas beyond town limits! Today Western Mercy Hospital still operates today as part of Saint Anthony’s Healthcare system! On December 5th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his annual message “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” while standing next to Dr Wm Hays who served as president at that time! This event coincided with World War I which heated up local tensions over food production quotas set by army authorities governing Kansas Territory! After much discussion among both sidesarnes local farmers formed a group called The Farmer–Labor Party hoping to attract workers away from military hostilities abroad so talks could be held regarding increased produce allotments within Kansas Territory!! Unfortunately these negotiations never led anywhere because management disapproved!!! In 1921 Congress passed an act establishing Jefferson Barracks within Kennebunkport Army Ammunition Plant along with other smaller commands such as Camp Robinson northwest of town !! Now known as Fort Hood American Forces Command National Military Museum

Kennett is a small town in north-central Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1836 by the Eichhorn brothers, who named it after Colonel John Kennett of the 1st Missouri Volunteers. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of two major wagon routes, and today remains a manufacturing center. Kennett has been home to several US presidents and several members of Congress, as well as notable athletes such as football player Len Dawson and basketball player Wilt Chamberlain. The first people to live in what is now Kennett were farmers who started farming in the area around 1836. The Eichhorn brothers, captain of a wagon train that arrived in 1838 from St. Louis, named their new community after colonel John Kennett (1792-1868), one of the leading soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1840, General James Kansa organized a military expedition into central Missouri against Osage Indian warriors and was forced to abandon his plans for an invasion when he learned that these powerful Native Americans had already killed many settlers in large numbers. As a result, settlement near present day Kennett began slowly but surely; families moving out there until very little remained within the boundaries of present day town limits by 1850. By 1860, only two houses remained within original town limits; all other buildings were clustered around what is now Union Pacific Railroad Station Square. Today's downtown area was planned and built primarily during World War II as part of Project PUSH – which aimed to encourage private industry and create jobs for local residents throughout east MO., Kansas City metropolitan area and St Louis County areas adjacent thereto including rural areas between I-435 on the south side of town and MO-1 on the north side across US-35W just outside Booneville). One primary goal behind this project wasTo increase transportation efficiency by having an airport located close to population centers while also providing necessary facilities for housing air traffic controllers (the airport would eventually become STL International Airport)and other related public activities associated with air traffic control including radar operations etc.. Today most aspects associated with Project PUSH are still operative although much less developed than when they were first proposed or implemented more than 25 years ago! In 1951 Drury Brothers platted what is now North Park Drive NE & Old European Road SW.; this plat included land that became North Park Drive which runs along modern day Union Pacific Railroad lineside & forms part of today's downtown square
The Kennett, Missouri area was first settled by the Anadarko and Potosi Sioux tribes in the late 18th century. The area became part of the United States in 1821. In 1862, General Napoleon Bonaparte's army invaded Missouri and destroyed many of the Native American villages in what is now Kansas and Texas. The destruction of these villages left a large number of natives displaced, so when Union troops arrived to help them fight the battle, they also took over much of present-day Illinois andIndiana. Many of these people moved into what is now Kennett County, Missouri. In 1865, General James Fenton decided to make an attack against Confederate forces near Stilwell Bridge on the Arkansas River known as "The Battle of Cold Harbor". This attack failed due to bad weather conditions and Confederate losses were high. As a result, Fenton pulled his forces back northward towards Springfield before culminating their campaign at Perryville on October 12th that year. This event helped solidify Union control over central Illinois while ensuring that Confederate forces would not be able to mount another major offensive against Union territory for years to come.
