Kennett is a town in Hancock County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kennett has been a stop on the old National Road (Route 66) since 1847 and one of its first businesses was a post office. The original town name was "New Lebanon." The community of Kennett was platted in 1847 by James Benge and others from Fulton Township. In 1851 it changed its name to Kennett after General Solomon W. Kennett who fought for Missouri during the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Kansas Territory. The Post Office at Kennett opened in 1850 and continued under that name until 1907 when it became part of Springfield. In 1865 Union general George Armstrong Custer died near where present day Interstate 65 crosses the small creek called Arabee which forms east side of town limits
Kennett was founded in 1827 by Colonel John Kennett, a United States officer who served in the Mexican-American War. The town became an important post on the Great Western Trail, and its early settlers included explorer David Thompson and miners such as George Stephenson. The town's growth slowed in the 1850s as railroad traffic increased, but it regained some of its former importance during the American Civil War. The Union army burned down much of the townduring their retreat from Gettysburg, but Kennett continued to function as a small rural community until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1895, Kennett was renamed for General James Ewing Kennett, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Vicksburg and Chattanooga during the Sherman Theater of the American Civil War.
