Once the chopped lumber had been cut to its final length, it was wrapped in cloth or paper and then heated until it became soft enough to be worked with. The heat caused the clapboard or other wooden parts of the barrels to harden and become stabilized. From here, it was simply a matter of boring out the boreholes all around the circumference of each barrel before firing them off at high speed in order to create an effective shot.

In 1830, Jesse Benton purchased 640 acres (240 ha) of land just north of modern Kennett from David Hickman for $5 per acre ($ today). This area became known as Benton County after Jesse Benton. By 1840, over 4200 people lived in or near Kennet

A post office called "Kennett" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first school in Kennett was built on the site of what is now the library. It opened as a one-room schoolhouse on November 15, 1830, and operated until December 1, 1831. In 1836, Jonathan Meeks moved to Kennett from Illinois and began operating an inn there. He became known for his Kentucky Fried chickens that he sold from his inn. One of the most significant events associated with Kennett during its early years was when General Andrew Jackson visited the area while campaigning for reelection against incumbent Henry Clay In 1838 he made a stop at Kennett after leaving Mount Vernon and observed several miles of corn fields that had been plowed by local farmers together with his horse Black Hawk which he described as being "...the best I ever saw". Reflecting on this visit later General Jackson said: "I cannot help but be impressed with this fine example of husbandry - these men spending so much time pounding down corn into schedules for market day." An important aspect of early Kennett history were its Baptist missionaries who came to preach Christianity to the indigenous peoples living around them through language translation services offered throughout their communities along with religious education programs available to local children between 1830 and 1840 inclusive (www2). One such missionary named Stephen Cushing lead a program that taught Native American children about Christianity starting in 1840 which has been termed “the beginning of white Education among American Indians” (Goudreau 7). The Baptists played an important role Additionally they helped lay the groundwork for organized religion amongst these people by teaching them how to read and write using their own languages which then served as both communication tools within their communities as well as sources of religious instruction (Frazier 5). Ultimately these missionaries helped create some form of cultural identity amongst these people giving them something apart from where they originally came from (Goudreau 7). This senseOf community also bolstered economic development within these communities as natives learned how to farm using European methods while still keeping many aspects traditional To those living near by including clothmaking partnerships formed between natives and Europeans resulted in increased trade opportunities thereby stimulating growth within these towns; providing jobs for locals as well as contributing greatly to overall stability/ prosperity (Frazier 5-7).

In the early days, Kennett was an agricultural center with many farms and plantations. In the late 1800s, Kennett became a manufacturing center with a large factory belonging to J.C. Penney. In the 1920s, Kennett became known for itsPsalmody School which offered music lessons to children in the area. Today, Kennett is home to several businesses such as Joe’s Pizza and Subway, as well as several schools including North Central Missouri State University and Southwestern Missouri State University.
