The town was named for General James Kennett, who served as a general in the American Civil War and later became a U.S. Senator from Missouri. In 1881, the first school opened in Kennett and remained open until 1954 when it merged with nearby Eureka to form Eureka- Kennett School District No. 2. The most recent tornado outbreak that struck western MO took place on November 3rd 2016 causing significant damage to homes and businesses across the region including Kennett which saw some destructive tornadoes touch down within minutes of one another leaving much destruction throughout portions of rural Missouri totaling over $100 million in damages according to insurance data Today, Kennett remains an active community with a rich history that has helped contribute to its current identity as a thriving agricultural center with several major farms dotting the landscape including Archer Farms (a family owned operation), Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., Inc., White Sands Milling Company, Monsanto AG and many more smaller companies and organizations that have made this community what it is today

Kennett was a small town in southeastern Missouri, United States for many years. At one time it was the largest settlement in that area. The community first appeared on the map of Missouri in 1821 as part of what is now Harper County. It was founded by Captain John Kennett and his wife, Sarah, who came from Virginia. They established a trading post at the confluence of the Kansas and White Rivers. The post became known as "The Fort" because it served as a base for exploration and trade along those rivers during the early days of Missouri Territory. Captain John Kennett's son, James W., operated a store and tavern near the fort until 1838 when he sold it to Elijah Woodruff. In 1839, Elijah Woodruff built an addition to the store which became known as "The House." From this building, he ran an inn which attracted travelers from all over Missouri and Kentucky who stopped at his establishment on their way to explore new land or take riverboats downriver to St. Louis. In 1841, Elijah Woodruff married Rachel Beale and moved into The House with her sister Sophia Beale (1802-1875). They operated it until about 1856 when they sold it to James Fenton (1798-1868). Fenton had been born in 1798 in what is now Lebanon Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania but had come westward to become a farmer after serving in the Union army during the American Civil War. He bought The House from Sophia Beale and continued to operate it until his death in 1918. During its time at The House, which occupied two stories with wide front porch overlooking both White River and Kansas Riverbanks,"the Inn" drew many visitors because its location afforded them complete privacy without having to worry about being seen by other residents or passersby on either side of their home door; guests could even watch boats pass by from their porch while sitting inside their home! This privilege was not available anywhere else on account of state law then governing how public places were managed withinMissouri Territory!
The first white people to permanently inhabit Kennett, Missouri were the family of Levi Coffin in 1819. The town was laid out by banker and landowner Samuel Chamberlain in 1825. When the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed in 1850,Kennett became part of Nebraska. In 1861, Confederate General John Buell's army invaded Nebraska and destroyed most of the town before retreating.
