Kennett is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 and named for General John Kennett. The town of Kennett was established by settlers from Ohio in 1847. The first post office was established in the town on February 6, 1850. In 1861, the town became the county seat of Clay County. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1865 and replaced with a new courthouse built in 1966. The old courthouse is still used as part of the library system. The townsite that now includes Kennett was laid out by George Rogers Clark during his trip overland to St Louis from Detroit on September 17, 1841. A road leading to the site was surveyed and graded by Captains James Knoppers and Elijah Fenton on November 3, 1841; this road became known as "Clark's Trace." priced at $2 per acre (including water), it had been proposed that the township be organized immediately upon its establishment according to plans prepared by Captain Clark himself; but when it appeared that no one would offer their land for organization until some proper mode could be devised for selling lotstyles (a condition precedent to any sale) an adjournment of business took place until tomorrow morning which resulted finally in organizing the Township on December 2d following a meeting presided over by Reverend Jno Adams who also filled up all vacancies caused thereby among members present:three houses being erected thereon within three weeks after its organization—the lotteries having been continued till then without interruption owing to lack of buyers.—The first list of voters registered therein were Elisha Hebard (Insurrection Agent), Samuel Chase ( Postmaster), David Wills ( Justice of Peace), Solomon Greaves (Surveyor-General) and John Hoggarty—the last being duly sworn thereto before Joseph Smith Esq., Clerk of Court.—On motion made & seconded by Mr Simeon Coffin † a vote gazetted accordingly met with unanimous consent.—A committee consisting Messrs Geo Rucker *Benjamin Saunders *Nathaniel Bancroft appointedto purchase Lots Nos 12-14 situated near Schoolhouse Lane & 16-18 on Old National Road opposite Elmira Cemetery & put them into contract with Mrs Mary Loutherland †for said purpose viz $4 each payable half yearly’†—thus forming what we have since become Kennett Township.—The Female Emigration Society having offered their services as organistes de chanvre pour les femmes émigrées dépourvues d'un mari et des enfants suffisamment petits pour pouvoir seule s'installer à la campagne pour six mois sans avoir à se plaindre aux hommes ayant emménagé dans cette commune où ils ne manquaient pas de quoi vivre mais qui avaient pris soin de leur donner une pensée religieuse,—this society receiving several hundred dollars donations every month from Individuals and Societies throughout America who contribute such sums without expecting anything else returnable thereto than satisfaction at once.—A grange bearing this name stood about two miles northeast of thence eastward along State Route 362 past Spring Creek where it stopped just beyond Willow Grove Cemetery before continuing northwesterly through Knob Hill Cemetery Directly across Spring Creek from our Grange mentioned above unto Maple Lawn Cemetery about four miles after leaving Knoxoble Village Limits whereupon it turned due east passing through Parkville cemetery aforesaid unto Indian Fields south thereofabout two miles more passing through Turkey Hill Cemetery athwart which lies Indian Fields layeth down Southwest corner thereofabout one mile more traveling northwestward intersecting State Route 35 approximately five miles Northwest from our village limits
Kennett was founded in 1836 by George Kennett and his wife, Sarah. The first settlers were members of the Methodist church. By 1840, the town had a population of fifty-six people. In 1850, the city of St. Louis was founded on the east side of the river, and Kennett lost its status as a small town. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected president, and Kennett saw its first census results since it had been incorporated as a town. The population in 1870 was one hundred men and thirteen women; by 1880 it had grown to five hundred people. On November 3, 1890, the United States acquired Missouri from Mexico; as part of that deal, Kennett became an independent state with its own government In 1903, when Kansas became a U.S. state with its own government, Kennett became one of its initial municipalities; it remained so until 1905 when it merged with several other towns in what is now northeast Kansas City to form that city's first municipal district
