In 1861–1862 Union General Sterling Price invaded Missouri to suppress slavery in that state; he discovered that slavery existed in Jackson County (now Clay County) but not inKC; he also learned that eastern Kansas was under heavy military occupation by Confederate forces led by General David Sedgwick; Price decided to leave southern Missouri without establishing any liberated slave states while he negotiated an agreement with President Abraham Lincoln to allow all slaves living within 6 miles of Springfield (then Hannibal) to be taken free without compensation though some owners did give their slaves away voluntarily.[1] On July 15th 1864 – just days after General Price's Invasion – Union Major John Cattelan organized the "Ender's Raid" against Confederate Major Robert Anderson's force at Independence Rock near present day Mount Pleasant[2][3]. A detachment from Captain Samuel Butler's 3rd Regiment fought hand-to-hand engagements against Confederate LtCol James Kapp'n's brigade under Colonel Robert Ewell until about noon when Pte Butler reportedly killed Col Kapp'n before escaping back downriver towards Independence Rock where his regiment awaited him,[4][5],[6] thus endingearning himself anacreon badge from veteran soldiers throughout his life[7],[8], thanks to a posthumous order given by then Union President Andrew Johnson to United States Senator Charles Sumner about this event:[9]
