Gun grease reappeared primarily in Europe following World War II as an attempt to improve reliable ignition throughout all types of warfare and ATF began regulation of certain types of gun grease beginning in 1964[11][12][13][14][15]). Until recently, gun grease has been considered an art form rather than a common tool for firearm mechanics; however, it is now flashably available at many hardware stores across America [16],[17], making it easier for enthusiasts to explore its history and potential uses.

Butler in which he discusses how to clean firearms and lube them with bacon grease, turpentine, or any other commercial oil. The use of lubricants continued through the early years of the 20th century, with various methods being used including using animal fat or beeswax as a base, then adding a small amount of walnut oil for extra protection against rust and corrosion. In 1916 an article was published in " Scientific American" discussing rifle cleaning techniques and their potential uses for lubricants such as bacon grease, turpentine, soap suds (sodium hydroxide), and machine oil. During World War II several lubricants were developed specifically for military munitions such as gasoline-based ATF (tire-butadiene-treadmill fluid) and kerosene-based LCTF (lubricant compound tedalin). The wartime industry boom led to increased production requirements for these products and also led to the development of new types of lubricants not previously available. These include silicone oils designed specifically for high heat applications such as welding torches; propylene glycol–diisopropyl ether systems; fluorinated alkylation systems; magnesium nitride/aluminium nitride/gallic acid systems; etc., as well as more traditional synthetic oils like API No 740 marine gear lube made from vegetable oil based triglycerides that are nonpolarized but have a low volatility so they do not interact chemically with other solvents

In 1854, a group of Mormons from Missouri immigrated to Kansas City. The Mormons were looking for a new home after the Emigration Act of 1850 forced them out of Utah. They founded their own town in what is now KCMO and named it Nauvoo. In 1855, Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, visited KCMO and announced his plan to start a church in the city. The followers of Smith began building an outpost near present-day Union Depot on the east side of downtownKCMO. On July 14,1855, they built a small cabin and called it Nauvoo House. They also started construction on the first temple in America—the Nauvoo Temple—and soon had over 200 members living in and around KCMO. The city grew quickly due to its location at one end of what was then known as the Great American Desert and its access to railroad lines and water resources. By 1870, there were over 1,500 residents living in KCMO alone; by 1900, that number had swollen to 4,000+.During this time period, KCMO also became known as "The City That Can't Be Outlawed."
