On October 15th 1870 Gideon Welles published a notice in The Daily Republican announcing his intention to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) north of center city limits at just under $1 per acre ($27 per ha). This purchase increased land values rapidly and well known businessmen such as Alonzo Mourning and J. P. Morgan began buying up tracts throughout central Kansas City so they could have a contiguous business district with their establishments within easy walking distance of each other unlike near-by towns which were served by various streetcar lines that took time to get around town or required traveling down long streets threaded with several stops before reaching your destination. In order to build this new district two important decisions were made: instead of using Public Works Administration (PWA) funds to demolish existing businesses then knock out entire blocks in order to build something more modern like Ayer Street or Grand Avenue—this type of redevelopment was typically done through private enterprise rather than government procurement—they used their own money which they had saved up over many years during times when public works projects were often slow coming through due political instability or financial emergencies like during World War II when wartime shortages caused construction delays galore! In 1898 Samuel Morse opened his Morse Telephone Company here at Ninth and Main Streets which became one of America's first commercial telephone companies providing service throughout much OFA including Oklahoma Territory until it merged with Western Union some 10 years later creating today’s Sprint/Verizon Wireless company! By 1916 there were over 100 businesses employing 6500 people downtown making it the largest commercial district eastof the Mississippi River! However due largely to prohibition efforts led by Anti-Saloon League president William Jennings Bryan this number decreased dramatically leading downtown businesses owners such as Alonzo Mourning and Joplin Glass Works owner Harry Laughlin selling off property holdings within “the ditch” area between 9th & 11th Streets southcentral KSCity Limits – forming what we now know as Downtown KC! The Grain Elevator Building at Tenth & Main Streets became home office for John Denton & Sons flour mill established 1886 followed by Hennepin Brewery 1896 also becoming home office for Armour Brewing Co 1904 followed by Anheuser Busch owns controlling interest 1909 until its sale back to HBC 1919 whereupon Busch breweries switched from lager beers (AnheuserBusch Brewery - Budweiser) into hard cider brands Schlitz 1915 until its sale back to AnheuserBusch 1923; Stieglitz 1926; Becher 1931; Maytag 1935 finally closing 1933 after merger with Kruger Maschinenfabrik AG becoming part Of Electrolux Corporation 1938 leaving Downtown KC essentially unopened since temperamental founder George W Kansan died suddenly while still dominate[ed] over all aspects except electric lighting systems!!! After Prohibition ended only small numbers remaining bootlegging continued but mainly smaller brewpubs converted into bars/restaurants etc., resulting in intense competition that weakened old timers' control over business patterns [eclectic architecture] Many famous buildings built prior To Prohibition include Masonic Temple 1907 cornerstone laid but never finished original architect unknown; First National Bank 1893–1895 main building not completed until 1912 despite attempts by mayor Proctor To have it finished; Pabst Beer Barrel house built 1889 now KNX Radio station building across street Live Oak Casino 1963 started live streaming poker matches inside casino daily via videotape link cable TV customers could watch live also

A new downtown skyline began emerging around 2006 which saw large-scale redevelopment including high-rise buildings (like One Chase Center), mixed-use projects (such as Midtown Arts District), riverfront redevelopment (including KC Waterfront Park) and dozens of smaller projects throughout town which have since helped revive downtownKansas City as one of America's premier tourist destinations
