Joplin was a small town in Missouri when the tornado struck on April 15, 2011. The tornado destroyed most of the town, killing 52 people and injuring more than 300. Joplin is an example of how tornadoes can affect communities and leave behind devastation. The town was founded by refugees from Kansas in 1871. It was abandoned after the tornado struck, and then re-occupied by local farmers who began rebuilding the community. After becoming re-active again, Joplin grew rapidly as a blue collar city with a heavy reliance on agriculture. The city hosted two annual world's fairs until 1906 when it lost its main source of revenue to railroad development north of the city limits. However, growth did not stop at what is now known as downtown Joplin; suburban areas started growing around Clay County Rd 246 south of I-70 and east of US 68 (the "Main Street Loop"). This area became known as "Joplin North" because it bisected Joplin's southern border (and still does). As other businesses opened up in this new area, prices for goods inside downtown continued to increase while those outside saw decreased prices due to lack of production or transportation options close by. In 2007–2008 Mayor Bob Fletcher formed a citizens' committee called "One Hundred Years Forward" which aimed to redevelop downtown into an attractive destination for shoppers and visitors alike – something that had been lacking since Downtown Joplins days as an agricultural center. Despite efforts by Mayor Fletcher and City Manager Donny Hilliard over many years culminating with passage of ordinances authorizing demolition within five years following reconstruction/updates through private investment under former City Manager Marty Latham – nothing happened until 2011 when Main StreetLoop redevelopment finally got underway amidst much fanfare including ribbon Cutting Ceremony provided by Governor Jay Nixon - making downtown one step closer to becoming what it once was: A vibrant shopping district complete with restaurants, retail stores & hotels with easy access to Interstate 70 & clay county roads

After the war ended, Joplin declined quickly in population and prosperity; its economic heyday arrived only after World War II as a result of its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas.
