Joplin, Missouri is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census. Joplin is located on the White River and its namesake river, which forms part of the border between Johnson and Clay counties. The first post office in Joplin was established in 1818. The townsite was laid out by Horace Mann and James H. Brown as a village on the site of present-day Joplin Municipal Airport. A year later it became a town with a schoolhouse and meetinghouse. In 1825 John Sibley built what is now Main Street in Joplin; he named it for his friend Solomon Stowell Bogan (1795-1868), an early settler who had helped organize the villages around Lexington, Kentucky. The first railroad to reach Joplin was the Great Western Railroad from Memphis to Springfield via Cairo, Illinois in 1867; however, no one ever arrived to call it home because there were no homes or businesses near the junction where track crossed White River at State Road 33 (now US 160). The tracks themselves did not line up with each other until 1904 when they were rerouted due to floods that destroyed many homes along the way. In 1870–71 John Pappenheimer founded what became known as "the Rubber Queen" slave businessantine on North First Street; she ran for years without interruption before finally closing down in 1865 due to competition from white entrepreneurs who bought her slaves instead of freeing them. In 1865 also came "The Friday Night Massacre" when Confederate troops burned down Union stores at Commerce City after nightfall during the Battle of Springfield – this event has been incorrectly cited as starting the American Civil War but actually occurred two months earlier when General Robert E Lee's army overran Union forces at Second Manassas Junction near Arlington Heights before marching into Virginia Beach to cross back over into Maryland
The town of Joplin, Missouri was founded on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1836 by residents of nearby Carthage. The town rapidly grew, and by 1855 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, Joplin became the capital of the Confederate States of America following the Battle of Corinth. The city experienced heavy damage during World War I, including an attack by German forces that killed more than 50 people. After the war, Joplin evolved into an industrial center with a variety of businesses and industry. The city also experienced growth in its black community as a result of post-war Reconstruction policies. In 1970, Joplin became one of the first American cities to become smoke-free after passage of legislation establishing this policy in local suburbs.
