In 1922, the first movie theater opened in Joplin when the projector company American Cinematograph Company (ACC) erected a two-story structure on Fourth Street. The theater was used until 1957 when it was replaced by an auditorium that still stands today. In 1928, Wernher von Braun created his own space technology company called Von Braun Film Corporation (VBF) in order to produce movies using launch vehicles he had designed himself. VBF soon became successful with their releases such as "Ender's Game" and "War of The Worlds". With increasing production values came increased competition from larger studios - by 1938 ACM had ceased operations entirely due to financial troubles. However, von Braun's legacy lives on through his foundation which continues production of films featuring science fiction themes today. When World War II began in 1939, most Americans were still unaware of nuclear warfare – this is particularlytrue in Missouri where only 10% of citizens knew about such weaponry at any given time! Joplin, Missouri was founded in 1847 by James H. Joplin and his brother John on a farmstead near the present site of Springfield, Missouri. The town's first settler was Isaac Griggs, who arrived in November 1847. By 1850, Joplin had a population of 150 residents. In 1854, Joplin became the capital of Missouri when that state was created from portions of Illinois and Kentucky. A number of large businesses were established in Joplin including Griggs Manufacturing Company (now Griggs Automotive), Mayflower Brewery, First National Bank (founded 1865), Phelps Dodge Mining Company (founded 1886), United States Rubber Works (1892-1901), American Can Mills (1907-1960) and Pabst Brewing Company (formed 1907). The city also became known for its music industry with several famous bands playing in Joplin throughout the 19th century including Pee Wee Crayton's Big League Clowns and Blind Willie Johnson's Memphis Minnie Band. In 1898, Mayor Fenton Carney erected an iconic tower called "The Star" at Third & Union Streets in honor of then-Mayor George Wickershams' efforts to promote downtown development. In addition to its economic success, Joplins infrastructure also flourishedduring this time period including Public Library System Superintendent Luther Kilpatrick's design for one of country's most ambitious public library systems; numerous water supply systems built during this era such as those at Third Street and Locust Avenue;[1] streetcar lines through the city;[2] construction of dozens of schools including both public schools operated by local parish governments and private school districts;[3] numerous parks such as State Fair Park; fire stations located throughout the city;[4]and even an original version of St Louis Municipal Airport! The name Joplin was given to the settlement because of the jagged rocks that lined the river's bank. The town grew rapidly and by 1845 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1849, Joplin became the capital of Missouri. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Joplin was one of the few cities in Missouri to support Confederate forces. After Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Joplin became an open-air market for goods taken from Richmond by Union forces. In 1865, Joplin was sacked by Federal troops following its role in helping organize Missouri's Unionist resistance movement. The city suffered significant damage and as a result lost many jobs and residents fled to other settlements in central Missouri throughout the war years. In 1870, when Kansas seceded from United States control and formed its own state, Joplin again lost many residents toimilian migration westward into Kansas City and other Kansas towns during Reconstruction. Joplin regained some prosperity after World War II through businesses such as aluminum production and construction; however, it has consistently declined since then due to economic volatility across much of North America. Today there are only a few small businesses remaining in downtown Joplin that provide support for local government operations such as police services and public works projects; most commercial activity takes place outside of downtown or within nearby malls or shopping centers which have replaced older downtown buildings asJOPLIN's primary tourist attraction.
