Joplin, Mo. was a small town in the early 1800s when it became known as the "Red Dot Sighting Capital of the World." From 1814 to 1821, Joplin hosted an annual international red dot sight competition. The event attracted top military and law enforcement officials from all over the world to compete for the honor of sighting a large red dot on a map of Joplin. In 1821, Joplin's first post office was opened and soon after, the town began receiving shipments of new rifles from England. This led to increased interest in shooting targets at night using red dots as sights. By 1830, Red Dot Sighting had become an official sport in Joplin with tournaments and exhibitions taking place at local churches and schools. As technology improved, so too did red dot sights. By 1868, Red Dot Sighting had evolved into what is today known as lasers sights. This change came about due to advances in artillery fire control technology that allowed for more precise target selection at ranges greater than 100 yards without having to use traditional iron sights or other eye-catching aiming devices such as reflexes or d'arsenals. Little and named for James K. Polk, then Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President and namesake of the city of Chicago, Illinois. The railroad arrived in 1871 and quickly became a major force in the community; it served as the town's primary industry until after World War II when heavy manufacturing took over. The downtown district has been preserved as an important commercial and cultural center since its heyday; today it retains a significant amount of its original architecture and flavor despite seeing modest development throughout most of its history The townsite that would become Joplin was first settled by Native Americans before being explored by French fur traders in 1699-1800. Spanish traders discovered it on July 4, 1795 while exploring the Arkansas River region between St. Louis and Fort Smith, Arkansas for Spain Bonaparte under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had just lost control of Mexico to Mexican revolutionaries led by José Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla during their attempt to overthrow Spanish rule there at Chapultepec Castle (the Battle of Monterrey). When France allied with Spain against Mexico in 1807 under Napoleon III following his victory at Austerlitz, France ceded all but what lay east of the Mississippi River to Mexico including this area which became known as Colorado de las Mesas or "The Mesa". Joplin developed slowly because transportation was difficult to come by given its location close to two major rivers: Canoga Creek on one side and Jefferson on the other bank (the mouth of which is now called First Street). As early as 1830s local farmers were growing corn, beans, cotton and other crops on cleared land about three miles southward along Canoga Creek from present day Central Avenue/I-435 junction

In recent decades, however, some challenges have emerged that have threatened to disrupt these progressions: namely gentrification related problems; crime rates; and environmental degradation
