Joplin, Missouri, is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 27,503 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1871 by John J. Worth and named for his wife's family name of Joplin. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The first permanent settler in what is now Joplin was Dutchman Hendrick Brouwer on a farm near present-day Springfield. He moved there with his family from Dutchess County, New York in 1792. In 1821, Elijah Porter settled here and built the first house on what is now State Street. In 1837, General James Kapp established Fort Donelson east of present-day Joplin to protect the fur trade against Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of Kansas Territory. A group of local farmers organized to defend the fort and drove back Grant's forces twice before he retreated into Illinois territory across the Mississippi River. In 1843–44, Major General Oliver O'Hara commanded Union forces during the Mexican War at Pueblo de Mexico west of Joplin where he destroyed some 25 Mexican cannons and captured several hundred Mexicans as prisoners of war. Joplin grew rapidly during its early years due to its location at a crossroads for wagon traffic between St Louis and Memphis on the main road from Great Britain to Independence (now Interstate 40). Wagonloads of goods rolled through this small town when Routes 66 and 68 intersected just north of town center in 1861; these routes would later be called I-40 and US 64 respectively). By 1870, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Joplin with a population totaling 3200 people – an increase of 50% since 1860! A cornerstone for downtown development was laid by Mayor John Fenton on November 8th 1865 while residents were celebrating their annual Thanksgiving dinner at Mrs Worth’s home; this milestone signaled completion of one half century of growth that began with Fenton’s election as mayoralty less than one year earlier! By 1880 Downtown had become “the most lively part…of all Johnson County” due largely to beer sales conducted by three merchants: Mr Hargrave (founder/owner), Wm Cramer (Fenton’s predecessor) & Geo Matson who ran a grocery store directly across Main Street from City Hall until it burned down in 1889! During prohibition efforts starting around 1920 various stores closed their doors including City Hall which effectively ceased operations once alcohol became legal again! The city of Joplin was founded in 1871 by James S. Webb and John P. Haney. The city was named for General Andrew Johnson, who had died in 1865. Joplin became a the focal point of the American West because of its location at the confluence of the Arkansas River and Missouri River. The towns around Joplin grew rapidly after it was annexed by Joplin in 1879. In 1902, an explosion at a local dry-wall company killed 25 people and injured dozens more. As a result, the city began to invest in safety measures, such as installing gas-fired power plants to prevent future explosions. In 1912, Joplin hosted the world’s first electric light show from atop Mount Hope Cemetery.
