The history of gun targets in Joplin, Missouri dates back to the late 1800s. At that time, the town was home to a sizable military force and there were many opportunities for target shooting. One of the first places people would go to shoot firearms was at a local golf course. Because of this, target shooting became an important part of everyday life in Joplin. One of the most famous gun targets in Joplin is the “Crazy Charlie” target located on Main Street. The Crazy Charlie target has been in use since 1903 and is still being displayed today. The target is made from solid wood and it is quite large- measuring almost 9 feet by 5 feet. It is one of the most popular targets around and can be found all over Joplin. Another well-knownguntargetinJoplinisthe“Red Baron”target located on Commerce Street. This target was manufactured in 1922 and it is one of the oldest gunsights in existence. The Red Baron Target measures 18 inches wide by 12 inches high and it features a red plane engraved on its surface. It can be found at several businesses in downtown Joplin as well as at other locations throughout the community.

The first gun target in Joplin was a small blacksmith shop, located on the southeast corner of 9th Street and Elmira Avenue. The shop was built in 1854 by John H. Griggs and his sons. In 1875, James C. Brown opened a rifle range on the northeast corner of 9th and Elmira Avenues. The range operated until 1923 when it closed due to Prohibition. In 1892, Wm. Fenton erected a five-shot rifle gallery on the northwest corner of 9th and Elmira Avenues which became one of the busiestgun ranges in the United States during its time frame; it was also known for its high-quality rifles offered for sale to customers from all over Missouri. In 1907, Ewing & Company erected a ten-shot rifle gallery on the southwest corner of 9th and Elmira Avenues which became one of the most populargun ranges in Joplin until it closed its doors in 1957 due to lack of patronage from shooters alone! In 1936, Al Capone set up his safe house at 527 South First Street; this made him one of only two men ever arrested while firing suspected firearms within city limits (the other being Harry Reems). After his arrest, authorities confiscated many rifles from Capone'ssafe house as well as items used in crime such as bullets and nails used during burglaries that occurred within city limits at that time!

Joplin, Missouri was founded in 1871 by James Fenton and is the second oldest city in the state of Missouri. It is located in the center of the state on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population of Joplin was over 100,000 when it was first established and has since shrunk to less than 30,000. The city is named after Major General Andrew Jackson and became a focal point for music and entertainment during its early years. In 1865, Joplin was hit by a tornado that destroyed most of town and killed more than 200 people. The city rebuilt quickly and today has a vibrant economy based on tourism, education, Manufacturing, healthcare, transportation/ logistics services as well as professional and research institutions.
Joplin, Missouri was founded on December 29, 1849 by James K. Polk and John T. Andrew as the city of Joplin. The City of Joplin was named for General William B. Johnson who served in the Union army during the American Civil War, and for Governor John Todd Lincoln who helped lead Missouri to secede from the United States in 1861. The first settler in what is now Joplin was David Witherspoon, who bought a tract of land south of downtown on November 5, 1851. The town grew rapidly due to its location near a major canal and railroad junction, as well as its easy access to water resources and markets. In order to accommodate the growing population, the city built schools and churches – both Methodist and Baptist – as well as an opera house and theater complex that still stands today. Joplin also became known for its breweries which produced such local favorites as Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and Anheuser-Busch beer
