What is now Joplin, Missouri was once a vibrant and prosperous town that thrived during the 19th century. The townspeople were known for their creative minds and innovative businesses. They were also highly influential in the local community and contributed to its growth. Joplin was founded by John C. Post in 1847 as a small cotton plantation near Nauvoo, Illinois. Post had come from a prominent family in Scotland and his parents had settled in what is now Missouri Territory in 1824. After working on his father's farm, John C. Post purchased land east of Nauvoo in 1837 and began to develop it into a small town named after himself, Joplin. He built several large buildings including a Masonic Temple and the first courthouse in central Missouri. During the 1840s, when slavery was banned throughout most of America, Joplin became an important slave trading center because it remained legal to purchase slaves within Kansas Territory at that time. Slavery continued to be legal within Missouri until around 1865 when it ceased abruptly due to new state laws banning slavery everywhere within Kansas except for some exceptions (mainly counties with free black populations). This created an opening for freed slaves who would illegally enter Missouri through territory controlled by neighboring Arkansas or Texas. These people are often called "The Lost Cause" of slavery because they failed to achieve any significant success while living under freedom but did manage to create lasting cultural connections between themselves and surrounding rural areas outside of Jackson County (the traditional slave-owning area). Joplin experienced rapid growth during the early years of the 20th century thanks largely to its proximity to two major railroads: The Kansas City Railroad Company (KCR) which connected Joplin with Kansas City via Union Station on Market Street and Hannibal Road east of downtown; and Chicago, Iowa & Pacific Railway which connected Joplin with Chicago via both Union Station on Lombard Street south of downtown and Hannibal Road north of downtown. The KCR also developed railroad terminals located at Carthage Avenue northeast of downtown (now part of Springfield), Westport Square northwest of downtown (now part of St Louis), Lincoln Avenue southeast corner Pulaski Street southwest corner Randolph Street north side opposite First National Bank building (now Scottrade Center), then along Randolph Street east side past Third National Bank Building before terminating at KCR Depot on Main Street south side opposite Fenton Hotel/Lodge.) In addition, various companies started up throughout Joplin such as Wesson Shoes, Gibson Guitar Corporation, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company etc., all providing jobs and economic development opportunities for residents during this time period . In 1831, Joplin was founded as a small town in the Illinois Territory. In 1839, it became the capital of Missouri. In 1861, Joplin was devastated by the Union Army's attack on Fort Sumter and lost much of its population. The city recovered slowly but steadily over the next several years, becoming an important center for commerce and culture. In 1865, Joplin became the state capital and remains so to this day.
