There is no doubt that the history of firearms in Joplin, Missouri dates back to at least 1836. In that year, Alexander Caldwell purchased a rifle from Captain John W. Gorham of Hennepin County, Minnesota and began experimentally firing it off the banks of the White River. The rifle was soon recognized as an excellent weapon for hunting game in eastern Missouri. In 1841, Mr. Caldwell again imported a rifle from Minnesota and placed it on display at the city hall. The rifle was fired by Mayor Jennings and other distinguished officials who were witnesses to its effectiveness. This event marked the beginning of firearm possession and use in Joplin. A few years later, in 1845, Mr. Caldwell organized a gun club which met monthly at his home for shooting practice and political discussion. This club became known as the “Caldwell Rifle Club” and continued its activity until 1861 when it disbanded due to lack of support from members. In 1846, Major Niles Atkins founded a military academy in Joplin under the name “The United States Military Academy at Springfield” with instruction in arms including rifles and pistols. This academy functioned until 1861 when it also disbanded due to lack of enrollment or financial difficulties; however, there are still remnants remaining today of this institution which can be found within Joplin Municipal Park (map).

The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than two hundred years. The first European to visit Joplin was Captain James K. Polk in 1821. He stopped at the trading post on the river and left behind a journal that mentions "a place called Joplin". A year later, Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Uniontown and found what he thought were Indian villages living among friendly people near where he had last seen American hostages being Sacagawea's family released from captivity in Montana by John Culp Jr.. In 1838, General Phil Sheridan passed through Joplin on his way to battle at Fort Donelson in Tennessee and ordered all inhabitants west of the river to leave or be fired upon. Most of those who remained Quitman Court House before leaving; some took with them anything they could carry including clothes, animals, tools, laundry items and furniture they stored there until their departure could be madepacked into wagons which took several days due to swollen rivers and bad weather conditions On July 4th, 1839 about 3200 citizens of Joplin assembled around an open fire burning crops that winter as tribute to United States President Martin Van Buren for his help during the Mexican-American War Moses Sayre purchased land east of present day South First Street which became known as Sayre Heights after him In 1865 an act by Congress designated Springdale Township within Joliet Township as part of newly created Jackson County . On November 5th date1867 when shots were fired over open city limits residents began calling themselves Mormons because they had control over most ammunition storage facilities east side main street between US highways 24&25
