A new post office was authorized at Joplin by an act of Congress on March 3, 1881; it was built on the site of present-day Market Street and opened on April 1st. In 1882–83 Joplin became home to one of America's first dry Douglass High Schools when a school committee composed of parents and students leased land from John Witherspoon for $3 per year (about $ today). In 1886 Joplin had its first hotel: The White Hotel which still stands today along Broadway between Third and Fourth Streets cornering University Avenue. On December 12th 1893 Union Pacific Railway Depot burned down killing six people including two firefighters who responded to put out the firestorm that followed minutes later (today this building houses Local 502 United States Post Office). The town also experienced some rapid growth following World War I withthe construction of military airfields nearby such as Little Rock Air Force Base in 1942 which would later become known as Midway Airport In 1947 there were only 210 residents living in downtown Joplin while 2200 lived east side off Elmira Road between First and Second streets In 1949 downtown saw its first shopping center when Armoury Mall opened across First Street from Union Station

The city of Joplin, Missouri was established in 1849 as a small town on the banks of the River Don. The town grew rapidly due to its location and good soil for agriculture. By 1860, the population of Joplin had grown to over 50,000 people. In 1870, an act was passed by the General Assembly that made Joplin an incorporated city. The following year, Joplin became the first city in Missouri to have a municipally-owned water system. In 1881, Joplin became one of the original twelve cities in Missouri designated to receive federal funds for infrastructure development. In 1885, an act was passed by the General Assembly that created the State Highway Department and authorized expenditures of $1 million for reconstruction in central Missouri. This project included improving roads and bridges across the River Don and providing access to new markets for agricultural products. In 1905, plans were developed for building a large waterworks system inJoplin which would provide drinking water for all residents ofJoplinand neighboring townships. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) completed construction ofthewaterworksystemin1915。 In 1933, Joplin experienced one of its most devastating natural disasters when a tornado touched down near downtown and destroyed many homes and businesses along with much vegetation within two miles radiusofthetwenty-mile wide tornado path.
