Joplin, Missouri is a small city located in northwestern Missouri. Established in 1871, Joplin was the first town in the area that would become known as the Great Western Plains. The population of Joplin peaked at 25,000 in 1920 and has since declined to less than 10,000 residents. Despite this low population density, there are still many interesting tidbits about Joplin's history that can be gleaned from its past. The first people to settle in what is now Joplin were Native Americans who lived along the Arkansas River delta. After raiding other tribes for food and goods, these early settlers developed a strong trade relationship with the Osage Nation. A band of Seminole Indians called the Comanche attacked and burned down two churches in 1821, which led to increased trading between Joplin and Mexico City. In 1827, General James Kurey arrived at Fort Riley and began planning his invasion of Texas. While Kurey was traveling through Kansas on his way to join forces with General Santa Anna against Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, he heard rumors of gold crops near Independence (Joplin). Kurein decided to investigate and founded a new settlement called Jefferson on November 1, 1827. The town would soon be renamed after Thomas Jefferson because of its proximity to Independence National Monument. After years of growth and development due to wagon trains delivering goods all over western Missouri Valley during the 19th century, there wasn't much left of Joplin by 1910 when World War I started. However, over time it has slowly regained some lost buildings and businesses including an opera house which reopened in 2006 after being closed for 45 years! Additionally, local artists have been creating art throughout downtown Joplin since 1970s which can be seen throughout parts of town such as Pioneer Courthouse Square or Main Street!
On July 1, 1871, Joplin was incorporated as a city by the Missouri Legislature. The city's first mayor was W. T. Hogg. This was one of the early cities in Missouri to be established on a permanent basis and it soon became an important center for trade and commerce. Joplin quickly became known for its musical talent and also for its popular music venues, such as the Cotton Patch Saloon and the Odd Fellows Hall. In 1870, Joplin had become home to the world's first electric light show when residents of nearby Pella wired their homes with large copper wires to create an alternating current (AC) system that allowed people to watch shows outdoors without havingto worry about electrical shocks or fires. One of Joplin's most famous citizens was Bob Dylan, who arrived in town in 1965 from Chicago just after his break-up with Joan Baez. Dylan would later say that "Joplin Music never died" and that "the cradle of rock 'n' roll [was] here."
