In 1957, the University of Missouri at St Louis opened its doors here and quickly began to shape Joplin into one of America's most important cities for higher education

Joplin was founded by Reuben Cooke in 1835. The town was named for James Joplin, an American singer and musician who had died in a river accident two years earlier. In 1837, the first store opened in Joplin. By 1840, the population of Joplin had reached 1,500. In 1847, Joplin became an independent city and began to develop its infrastructure such as a water filtration plant and post office. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Joplin and started to create new opportunities for businesses in the town. However, by 1870, most of the businesses had closed or been sold off due to competition from larger cities like Omaha or Kansas City. By 1880, Joplin was again a small town with only 100 residents. However, it continued to grow as a tourist destination due to its natural resources such as coal mines and waterfalls. In 1943, during World War II, Joplin became one of few American towns that actively supported the war effort. During 1945-1946, many aspects of local life were disrupted when Allied troops burned down part of the town's cotton gin during their advance into Germany following World War II. However, after German forces evacuated the area on April 10th 1946 without damage or loss of life,[1] most of what remained of Joplins' early commercial development recommenced.[2] In 1951-1952; however; some changes took place within city government which led to increased tensions between black & white citizens over housing rights & other social issues[3][4]. On November 3rd 1957; Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination left downtown JopLIN almost completely destroyed by fire which also damaged numerous restaurants and other business building[5][6]. Aftermath: As community rebuilt with help from national guard troops; racial tension increased again until 1969 when Mayor John Brunner signed ordinance breaking all barriers between races once more[7], leading eventually to riots that year known as "The Riot at Jackson Park". It is estimated that up to 30 people were killed & 500+ injured in this outbreak while thousands more were displaced[8]. Overall effects:Riots ended shortly afterwards with consent decree being put into effect providing financial compensation (mostly cash) to affected individuals & businesses
Joplin was founded in 1847 by James J. Hill, a cotton planter and slaveholder from Kentucky. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as an U.S. senator from California before moving to Missouri in 1839. In 1870, the city's population was around 15,000 people; it grew to over 100,000 by 1900. Joplin became a major center of American music and culture during its early years, with bands such as the Legends and Vandals playing at local venues. In the 1930s, Joplin began to experience significant economic decline due to World War II shortages of munitions and other goods; however, it regained some popularity in the 1960s as a cultural center for rock 'n' roll music and popular protest movements such as the Black Panthers On November 14, 2008, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Joplin; within minutes after the quake occurred there were reports of extensive damage throughout downtown Joplin including several buildings that collapsed or fell victim to fire
