In the early 1800s, Joplin was a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. The town's only industry was agriculture. But airguns were beginning to be introduced into the local community, and by 1825, airgun clubs had been formed in Joplin. Airguns were then used for hunting small game and other target animals. In 1828, an ordinance was passed in Joplin prohibiting the discharge of firearms within city limits. However, this ordinance did not take effect because it was repealed two years later. In 1829, an ordinance was passed in Joplin that allowed for the discharge of handguns within city limits with a permit from the police department. This ordinance also took effect on July 1, 1829. However, this ordinance didn't take effect because it wasn't published until October 15th and it required permits to be obtained from both the police department and the mayor. The first successful airgun shooting event occurred on November 10th, 1830 when six people participated in a shoot at what is now called "The Park" located east of downtown Joplin. At that time, rifle shootings were still considered more important than handguns due to their numerical superiority over pistols at close range engagements during combat situations; however, handguns began to become popular among airgun enthusiasts starting in 1840 as they became less expensive and easier to operate than rifles

Joplin, Missouri was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 as a fur trading post on the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. The town rapidly grew into a thriving city after General Solomon George Perry developed the first paper mill in 1835. Joplin became an important center for railroad transportation and commerce during the late 19th century, becoming known as "The Gateway to the West." However, by 1921 Joplin had become one of America's most troubled cities, plagued by social unrest and economic decline. In that year, local residents elected A.F. Staley as mayor to address their concerns about rising crime rates and lack of education opportunities. However, Staley quickly faced political opposition from influential business interests who saw Joplin's success as a threat to their market share. In 1925, Joplin was again hit with violence when its black population staged a series of peaceful protests against racism in local businesses and government institutions. This period is often referred to as "The Race Riot Years." In 1931, Mayor Staley moved his headquarters from Joplin to Springfield due to budget constraints; however, he never relinquished control over city affairs or lost faith in municipal socialism. This strategy failed to revive Joplin's economy or improve its social conditions; instead it led to increasing tension between white (and some black) residents and African Americans working in nearby townships. By 1935, riots had resumed throughout much of southern Illinois due to continued discrimination against African Americans within various businesses and government agencies. These events finally forced Mayor Staley out of office in 1937 after years of protest and internal discord; he was succeeded by his son John F.'s more radical agenda which focused on expanding public education opportunities for all regardless of race or socioeconomic status. Joplin eventually reverted back into a struggling city by the early 21st century; however, it remains one of America's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its rich history and vibrant community spirit

In the 1920s and 1930s, Joplin became one of the most important cities in Missouri after it gained control of its local media company. The city experienced significant economic decline during World War II, but regained some stability in the postwar period. Joplin experienced another period of growth following the return of technology firms in the 1980s and 1990s. However, recent economic declines have led to a decrease in population and employment in Joplin over the past decade.
