Jennings, Missouri is a small town in Ozarks County located on the edge of the Springfield-Springfield metropolitan area. The population was 7,562 at the 2010 census. The name "Jennings" comes from French for "The Well". An early settler in Jennings was James Jenney who arrived in 1836. A post office called Jennings was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, settlement began by men who had come overland from Illinois. By 1870, there were 120 residents living here and businesses were being started as merchants bought land to raise crops and sell goods. A school was built in 1871 and a cotton gin operated here until it was closed in 1903; however, the town's first hotel (the original White Sands Hotel) opened on December 6th of that year. During World War II, Jennings served as an air base for the United States Air Force during Operation Overlord which ended on September 2nd 1945. It also served as a POW camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. After the war, the town became known for its soft gun case history which begins with several people coming to Jennings to buy guns prior to state regulation of firearms sales beginning May 1st 1949 when Kansas passed an act regulating handgun sales throughout the state. On February 14th 1951, a billwas introduced into the Missouri General Assembly proposing that all handguns be registered with the state within 60 days after manufacture or purchase and any changes made to them must be reported to city hall within 24 hours so that law enforcement could make arrests or protect citizens if necessary; this proposal failed to become law due to opposition from local politicians who felt that registration would lead to more taxes being levied against them by government officials instead of helping their constituents! On May 1st 1949 Kansas repealed its previous handgun regulation making Jennings one of only four cities statewide where such regulations still exist!
