In1925, when it became a city, Jennings enjoyed rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of major cities such as St Louis and Kansas City. However, following World War II, jobs available in downtown Springfield dwindled and Jennings fell behind in terms of development opportunities; accordingly, its population slipped below 1,000 until reaching 1,069 at the 2000 census.
