Jennings was originally located on the southern edge of what is now Springfield Township, but when that township was organized in 1848 it became part of Jennings. The first store opened in 1850 and by 1861 there were six stores and two hotels in the town. In 1862 a schoolhouse and courthouse were built, followed by a hospital in 1865. The primary industry until the late 1800s was agriculture, with small businesses doing such things as hitching horses for farmers or running dairies. However, starting around 1900 some industries started to emerge: manufacturing products such as radios and phonographs; service businesses like laundry and grocery stores; and tourism with its own hotel/motel complex beginning development around this time. By 1960 Jennings had become an important transportation center with five churches (of which three are still operating), four schools (grades K-12), one hospital, two factories, three warehouses—one used for automotive production—and fifteen residences total.
