Jennings, Missouri is a small town in Posey County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2000 census. Jennings was founded in 1838 and named for General James K. Jennings who fought in the Mexican-American War. Jennings is part of the Springfield metropolitan statistical area. The township was organized on February 14, 1838, from parts of Ralston Township. The first post office in Jennings was established on March 3, 1838. Jennings was incorporated as a city on July 15, 1908. On April 12, 1912, it became a town again after being changed from an agricultural to a manufacturing center due to its large production of pork products and other agricultural products. The city had 2 industries when it merged with neighboring Posey City on October 6 of that year: textile mills and peanut butter plants. The last major employer outside of farming were the Peanut Butters Company which closed its doors in 1984 and all remaining jobs were eliminated by this company due to consolidation within the peanut butter industry; however there are still many remnant land holdings across both townships which produce peanuts for local consumption or processing into other products such as flour or nut butters; as well as two corn ethanol plant operations located near Jennings and Springfield providing some new employment opportunities for locals during these tough economic times

In addition to its role as an economic center, Jennings also served as a postal service hub with two postmasters being located there at different times. Jennings experienced another period of growth during World War II when more than 1,000 citizens enlisted in the military to help fight for their country. The town rapidly expanded following the war and by 1945 it had reached its current size with over 10,000 residents.
