Jennings, Missouri is a small town located in the state of Missouri. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Jennings has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was part of the Shawnee Nation until 1795. The first European to arrive in what is now Jennings was James K. Polk, who made a land grant to Pierre Dorion in 1836. In 1839, Jennings became a county seat of Clay County. It lost its county seat status in 1897 when Webster County was created from Clay and Benton counties. Jennings remained an unincorporated community until it incorporated as a city in 1907. Jennings, Mo. is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Jennings is named after Isaac Jennings, an early settler and landowner in the area.
Jennings was founded by Captain James Totten on April 25, 1836 as part of a settlement on the east bank of the Missouri River near present-day Atchison, Kansas. The first post office in Jennings was established on May 3, 1836; it was named for Captain James Totten. A church was built there in 1859 and dedicated by Bishop John Davenport with services being conducted there until 1895 when the present sanctuary replaced it.
The first store in Jennings opened its doors on July 2, 1847; it was operated by John Auld from his house on Main Street. In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded St Francois County and burned all of what remained of Jennings to destruction while seeking refuge along the riverbank at Topeka under cover of darkness. Many people lost their homes and businesses during this time period due to Forrest's actions. The burning has been said to be one of the most destructive eventsever suffered by any community in America.
