A post office called Jennings was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1898, the town had a population of 1,000 and an incorporation date of November 3 that year. The name change came about because of confusion with nearby Jenningsville which had been renamed Jenningsville after its incorporation date but still bore the original name of its founder. In 1902, Jennings acquired land from Illinoisan George Wray to create what is now known as Park Heights Cemetery. The first cemetery there consisted of only one burial ground with a capacity of 100 graves. In 1906, when Park Heights Cemetery became part of Forrest City Cemetery system within Jackson County limits, Jenkins bought additional land around it to make up for lost acreage when Forrest City purchased neighboring properties from manufacturer John Denny & Co.. Today Park Heights Cemetery offers more than 11 million burials nationwide due to advances technology and increased competition from other cemeteries across America.
