Jennings is a small town located in Jennings County, Missouri, United States. It is the smallest county in Missouri and home to only 2,500 residents. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Jennings was James White in 1827. The town was named for Major General Nathaniel Jennings who fought in the Mexican-American War. Jennings post office was established on December 17, 1835, and it served until November 15, 1865. The first school built in Jennings was a log cabin which burned down on October 10, 1836. A second school building was erected by Mr. Hargrave around 1840 and remained in use until it burned down on July 12, 1912. It wasn't until 1848 that a brick schoolhouse replaced the original structure which still stands today as part of the Jennings Municipal Library system. On March 3rd of that year a fire started inside the new schoolhouse and quickly spread to adjacent buildings causing extensive damage including $1,000 worth of property damage! In 1850 an addition to the existing frame schoolhouse were constructed with funds raised from local subscriptions; this building remains operational to this day as part of Jennings High School’s student body social hall/ auditorium complex known as “The Old Building”. In 1861 an addition were also constructed to house a blacksmith shop and other related businesses; this building became known as “The Blacksmith Shop Annex” after its conversion into apartments following city annexation into Jennings Township in 1966 (Jennings now has two cities). On January 1st 1870 an act passed by Congress entitled An Act To Establish A Railway Between Harrisonburg And St Louis Which Was Approved By The President On April 24th gave permission for construction of the Illinois Central Railroad through Jennings County with tracks running east-west within one mile of each side oftown according to plans drawn up by John Pemberton & George Stephenson who operated nearby Hannibal railroad station while construction took place; passenger service began operating from Hendrickson Junction on May 1st 1870 making Jennings one of America's earliest towns along railroad lines! As rail travel grew more popular throughout America during this time period regular trains ran between major metropolitan areas such as Chicago and St Louis providing everyday citizens with access to important cultural activities without having to leave their homes!
