Jennings, Missouri is a town in Benton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,799 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. The first gun in Jennings was built by Elisha Gray in 1821. Jennings was incorporated as a city on November 17, 1905. On May 1, 1907, it became a county seat of Benton County and remains so today. Jennings has been inhabited by Native American nations for over 10,000 years and their guns were used to trade with other tribes. One such weapon was called the “Bear Gun” because it could shoot bears that had come down to hunt near the village. In 1838-39 John Rarick built two shotguns and killed five buffaloes with them while hunting on his farm outside of Jennings. This event is often cited as being one of the first gunfights in history when firearms were introduced into what is now St Louis County form Illinois). In 1846 James Fenton opened a grocery store in Jennings and soon began selling rifles to farmers and Sporting Goodsmens throughout eastern Missouri for use against Indians or buffalo during the Indian Wars . By 1865 pistols had become available for purchase from local merchants and many people started carrying handguns for protection purposes rather than just shotguns
