In 1837, when General James Kossuth arrived in Missouri to suppress the Kansas insurgency, he renamed it Jennings after himself because he felt its strategic importance as part of what would become known as the Old Northwest Territory would make it difficult for Kansas settlers to move into his new state without first meeting resistance from local Native Americans. As time passed other settlements were named after geographic features or historical figures such as Pawnee City (Oklahoma), Fort Gibson (Indiana), Lawrenceville (Georgia), or even Hannibal (Missouri). When Jennings became part of St. Francois County it was anglicized to "Jennings." The growth of Jennings during its early years was due to its location on the junction between two major trails that connected eastern Kansas with western Missouri: the Santa Fe Trail running north from Topeka via Independence and Shawnee Townships west from Council Bluffs via Westport; and both these trails crossed at Jennings Falls where travelers could get amplification before continuing their journey south overland to Springfield or east over water onto I-70 near Jefferson City. The family continued to grow and many children were born into the family including James P., William D., Fannie M., Minnie L..John A."The three-generation Jenkinsons resided at various locations until 1865 when they moved back to their original home on Main Street which still stands today." In 1865, Jannetty M’Dear (daughter of Mr.) sold land that adjoined theirs for $1 an acre which allowed them more space than they could have ever imagined for farming purposes so they decided to move back into their original home on Main Street where they continue to live until this day with six children: James P., William D., Fannie M., Minnie L,, John A.,"Doris", "Violet" & "Grace". Doris (wife), Violet (daughter) & Grace (grandaughter) are currently living here with us & we enjoy having them around! From 1862-1876, there were several schools near by but no one lived close enough so that each student could attend school together like we do today! Mrs….(mother or teacher) would take care of all our schooling while also working part time at home! On July 4th 1868, people from surrounding towns convened at Carbondale for a picnic which included games, music etc.—the first time such an event happened in this area! This gathering marked the beginning of summertime fun hereabouts & has gone on annually ever since! Of course, some folks always bring along something special for the annual dance held during Labor Day weekend—it’s always lotsof fun watching all those younguns get ready for that big day!!!
Jennings was founded by Adam Jennings in 1839. The town was named for the Jesse Jennings family, who had donated land to the town. The first store in Jennings was built on State Street and opened in 1840. In 1851, the first post office was established in Jennings. In 1870, a railroad connection to St. Louis was made and Jennings became an important local community.
