Jennings, Missouri, is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,957 at the 2010 census. Jennings was founded in 1848 by John C. Jennings and his wife Anna. It is the only settlement in Johnson County that was not established by settlers from Illinois or Kentucky. The first post office was established in Jennings on July 16, 1851. The community of Jennings developed as a result of two common interests: farming and lumbering. In 1856, a sawmill opened in Jennings and began producing lumber for local homes and businesses. By 1860, the town had acquired its own courthouse and jail. In 1865,Jennings became the site of the first interracial marriage in Johnson County when John Aiken married white female Martha Belleford. At this time western Johnson County consisted mostly of Indian Territory under US jurisdiction
Jennings was founded in 1836 by James Jennings and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the Jennings family's farm that was located in what is now Jennings County. In 1839, Jennings became the county seat of Jennings County. The first courthouse was built in 1840. In 1861, the Confederate Army invaded Missouri andJennings was burned to the ground by Confederate troops. After the Civil War, Jennings gradually regained its status as a prosperous community with a population of over 1000. On July 1, 1907, Jennings became an independent city and adopted a new name: St. Louis City limits were enlarged to include all of Jennings County excepting the small town of Liberty which remained part of Liberty Township until it merged into St. Louis on January 1st, 1920
