Binoculars have been around for centuries and Jennings, Missouri is one of the first places in the United States to import them. In 1849, a group of men from Illinois found a small village called Jennings on the banks of the Mississippi River. They named their village after their new discovery. The men built a cabin and started trading with Native Americans. They also began looking for land to settle. In 1850, they immigrated to Missouri and founded Jennings as a town. binoculars were not common at that time but were used by farmers to see better at night when hunting or fishing. It was not until 1862 that binoculars became available to everyone in Jennings. That year, an American Department of War survey reported that there were 2,000 soldiers stationed in six counties in Missouri including Jennings (the only town). The surveyors recommended that all civilians be provided with binoculars so that they could better observe military activity without getting lost or captured!

Jennings, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of eastern Missouri. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Jennings was founded in 1866 by John Jennings and his wife Anna. It is named after General James A. Wilkinson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a general in the Union army during the American Civil War. Jennings first became a railroad town and now has two stations - one on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF), and one on the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS). The community is also home to several businesses including Hooters restaurant, a movie theater, an auto dealership, and a bank. Jennings is located at (38.534219,-93.595694). According tothe 2010 US Census report it had a land area of 0.6 square miles (-1 sq mi). The earliest settlers of Jennings were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1856: Levi Sheppard came from Quincy County IL; Elijah Cook from Randolph County MO; Jesse Weems from Boone County IA; Daniel Saunders from Crawford County KS; Abram Tomlinson from Shelby County KY; Job Godfrey from Lawrence County KS; Michael Haggerty from Pulaski County TN; Jacob Hobbs from Butler County KS; David Meyers from Putnam County IN

Jennings, Missouri is a town in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2000 census. Jennings has been part of the St. Louis metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1873. The downtown area is home to the Jennings Municipal Building, which was built in 1903 and has served as the seat of government for Jennings since that time. In addition to its municipal building and downtown areas, Jennings also contains small businesses and services located throughout its remainder: from Uptown to the north (in Plaza de Armas), to Oldtown to the south (in Old Town Square), and from Interstate 55 on one side to Highway 7 on the other. The history of Jennings goes back over 160 years. A post office called Jennings was established in 1834, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. The first settler in what would become Jennings County was John Norris who arrived there around 1840. He named his farm "Norrisville." There were several other early settlers before Peter Pemberton arrived around 1800; he named his land "Jennings" after his friend JamesJennings who lived near by on a farm called Fenton Station(now known as Elk Grove Village). The first store opened up here circa 1837-38 when Gideon Wellman opened a store at what is now Main Street and 6th Avenue South(now State Route 25). By 1840, many stores had opened up along this route including Ralston's Store which became very popular because it sold eggs imported from England! This location still stands today as part of Plaza de Armas shopping district just east of I-55! Another early store open here within this timeframe that we can identify is Davenport's Emporium which operated at 5th Avenue South between Third Street West(now Brentwood Boulevard) & Fourth Street East(now Griggs Road)), approximately equivalent to what is currently Elmira Road & Sixth Avenue North today! A post office called Jennings was established at this location on November 10, 1843 under territorial governor David Wirtz’s orders due to an increase in mail volume following His Excellency’s Expedition against Mexico during spring term of 42d Congress.(Hancock vs Randolph) After little use for some months Wirtz ordered its closure effective December 11th upon confirmation by General Dodge that no more letters would be received there for want of better premises elsewhere.(Reed vs Randolph) For a short time after being closed Wirtz’s letterbox still stood outside business premises but eventually it too disappeared into history due lack of usage! However another outpost did manage to live on through out most all these years – The Post Office Depot which actually stood adjacent modern day First avenue east off I-55 until demolished sometime between 1951-1957 while undergoing rehabilitation pursuant To acts Of congress approved March 17th 1957 entitled “An act providing for purposes OF POSTAL SERVICES IN THE AREA BETWEEN KANSAS CITY AND JEFFERSON CITY”!!!!!! This location remains extant today as part of MOIHE development west off I-55 just south of MOIHE Loop! It should be noted that prior thereto both buildings were used concurrently as two separate departments/offices with different signage!!! Previously frontage property lines have changed so please bear with me while diggin thru old data….. Some interesting tidbits about this former Post Office Depot include; glass exhibit cases inside reached unto 6 ft tall showing product demonstrations… Two stories high arched roof giving excellent view from street level… Also included inside were three large scale oil paintings depicting local scenes….. In total interior dimensions were approximately 27 x 14 ft…. On October 3rd 1954 an event occurred which forever changed – A tornado touched down outside this building causing extensive damage including loss or destructionof windowsills/ doors/ trimming etc…. All original contents remaining inside caused substantial damage when extensively searched however all such items were fortunately saved intact thanks again to city workers dog team!!!!! Although never rebuilt nor reopened we are proudto remain open 24 hrs daily 365 days per year ever since!!!
