Jennings was founded in 1825 by a family of farmers and ranchers. The township was named for John Jennings, the first settler. The Jennings family operated a small farm until 1837 when they moved to what is now Jennings County. In that year, the land was acquired by the Missouri government for an agricultural research station. The Jennings family continued to farm their land until 1857 when they sold it to J.H. Richardson and others who began developing the township into a town. By 1870, the population of Jennings had grown to over 1,000 people and it remained growth throughout its history. After World War I, many Jennings residents served in the military; among them were future Ulysses S Grant, who served as an artillery officer in World War II and later became president of United States; and James Mclntyre Jr., who became mayor in 1945 and held that post until his death in 1951.Jennings’ economy has been based on agriculture since its founding; however, during recent decades, industry has become more important in the township’s economy with some businesses located within walking distance of each other. Industries which have thrived include manufacturing (textiles, clothing, paper), transportation (roadbuilding/repair), retail (stores and restaurants) and services such as health care (medical clinics). Some notable landmarks within Jennings include Stroud Woods Cemetery (founded 1840), Beechwood Golf Course (opened 1907), courthouse Annex School District No.(1896), Piggott-Goodman Funeral Home(1901) and First Congregational Church(1911).
