Jefferson City, Missouri was once a major center for the shooting of firearms. The city's many gun shops and ranges allowed for plenty of opportunities for people to shoot handguns, shotguns, rifles and pistols. Gun enthusiasts from all over would come to this small town in northwestern Missouri to buy and try new firearms. One of the most famous gun stores in Jefferson City was the Armoury Arms Co., which operated from 1912 to 1969. At its peak, the Armoury Arms had a store inside of the old courthouse on Main Street. It was here that people could purchase handguns, shotguns, rifles and revolvers. The store also sold accessories such as muzzles, sights and stocks. In addition to its role as a popular shopping destination for shooters, Armoury also became known for its function as a training ground for local police officers. Officers would often attend classes at the store before being deployed into patrols or crimes scenes. In 1969, Armoury closed its doors after more than 40 years in business. But the memories of customers and trainers alike will continue long after it has been replaced by newer businesses in Jefferson City.
