The city was founded in 1839 by General James K. Polk as a small backwater on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1865, when Union General Jubal Early fought his way into Kansas and took control of much of that state, Polk moved his family to Independence, KS so they could be near Early's forces. When Missouri seceded from the United States in 1861, Jefferson City became part of Confederate Missouri. It was not until after the American Civil War that things changed for Jeff City; it became an important trading center for goods coming out of central Illinois and arriving downriver through Hannibal and St Louis (now Ferguson). However, trade did not continue as significant after Reconstruction ended in 1877 because cotton prices were high enough to support large manufacturing centers like Chicago while also keeping production costs low enough to allow small towns like Jefferson City to remain economically viable. The first building erected in town was a log cabin built by Col. Jesse Benton on what is now Main Street in 1839. A two-story frame building named "Benton's Store" replaced it about 1850-1851 according to local history books published during that time period. A schoolhouse built about this same time served as both a Methodist Church and Local School District until 1860 when a new brick schoolhouse was completed on what is now Elm Street serving all of downtownJefferson City including most of its east side extending northward beyond First Avenue onto Harrison Avenue which then extended westward past present day US Route 64/I-435 before terminating at current day US Route 53 just south of downtownJefferson City proper (formerly Cedar Rapids Road) - All these buildings are still extant within walking distance or drive across town today! In 1865 Union General Jubal Early fought his way into Kansas and took control over much of that state prompting Polk to move his family here so they could be near early forces fighting against Early's army although they would only stay here for a few years due to continuing hostilities between Union & Confederate forces throughout the area until Lincoln called off all combat operations following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in America on Christmas Day 1863 On January 1st 1870 when Territorial Governor John Dickson designated Jefferson County as one section within newly created Indian Territory along with Barnes County (later Boone County), Jackson County (later Webster Parish), Gratz Township (later Taylor Township), Pulaski Township ( later Pulaski Municipal Airport) Butler Township (later Butler Municipal Airport), Dixon Township ( later Dixon Municipal Airport) Monroeville Borough - all these areas were included within new boundaries set forth by Congress under Executive Order No: 7251 dated February 17th 1870 which designated portions or counties lying east & southwesterly thereof withinvision bounds lines if such limits should ever be altered or enlarged excepting quantity or position Of certain lakes situated therein & no part thereof shallever become territory subject thereto without their consent nor any other compensation than that caused by said order Compliance with said order has been constantly sustained throughout its full course It should be noted that this designation did not include present day Monroe County located entirely within present day Randolph County! This fact may have something do with why there has never been more than one grocery store open per block adjacent inside & outside street borders EVER throughout our entire history - every store owner (& everyone who works for them!) having either owned land adjoining their property outright OR donated land free from charge thereby preserving (& profitable) property rights thru deed restrictions preserved thru occupancylimits
