In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant took over control of Missouri from Confederate General Robert Ewing after Battle of Pea Ridge where many northern soldiers died including future President Andrew Johnson who later mentioned Grant's dead body on his speech about Reconstruction which began on August 12th that year in Washington D .C .. On July 20th 1865 Union Major General Oliver O'Neil relieved Confederate Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton commandant at Fort Leavenworth Barracks near Jefferson City after Fenton refused orders to desert his unit during the siege of Fort Sumter which ended April 12th 1865.. Aftermath of battle saw thousands killed or wounded including some officers who were tried and hanged as traitors however many more managed to escape alive... By 1870 only 2 out of every 10 people living in town remained while most had moved away.. This trend continued until the arrival of railroads and development around 1940 when most residents returned home again...Today there are less than 400 people living in downtown Jeffersontown making it one of America’s least populated cities according to Population studies done by the National Congress Of American Indian (NCAI) The area around today’s downtown Jeffersontown was once occupied by several headed families who farmed land here until railways arrived and replaced them with large housing developments beginning around 1840s although some buildings still remain from this time period such as the Masonic Lodge built c1862-1864 next door to what is now called “The Capitol building” The original site for present day downtown Jefferson City was developed along Front Street eastward from current US Highway 65 between Springdale Road and Council Bluffs Road before being channelized northward into what is now Main Avenue by members of numerous local cattle ranchers led by Edwin Calkins starting about 1840s According to data compiled by NCAI History researchers Allen Riddle and Darrell Schweitzer within their book "JeffersonCity: A History" various other early settlement areas include Berry Hill east side currently bounded by US Highway 66/Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard southwest corner; White Settlement northwest side bordered on two sides by Carrollton Road northeast corner; Asbury Heights southeast side located just south off I-435; North Side southwest corner near current location of Walgreens drugstore
