The first gun target in Jefferson City was a blacksmith shop. It was built in 1820 and remained in use until the early 1800s. In 1859, a local militia company had their first range session at the old arsenal. The company member, Captain James Fenton, shot an FN chambered rifle off a log by the river. This event is generally considered to be the first shoot out of Jefferson City's history.

The first permanent settlement in Jefferson City was made by fur traders on an island in the Missouri River in 1813. A post office operated from 1814 to 1827, then from 1830 to 1838; it was renamed JeffersonCity after George Washington Jefferson, general and president of the United States (1801-1809). The city was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1839, by order of Governor David Ritchie. The original plat for Jefferson City included land that would now form part of downtown St. Louis; however, only 2/3rds of this amount was actually developed because investors were not interested in purchasing land near downtown while they continued to build factories and other businesses along I-44 (now Main Street). The city's growth accelerated during World War II when production increased for materials such as aluminum cans and tires required for military aircraft production; this led to more jobs available for people in nearby St. Louis than any other municipality outside of Chicago or Detroit during those years. After World War II ended, development slowed until the early 1990s when new investments began once again bringing new jobs into town including information technology and health care sectors among others In 2006, Jeffco became one of just two jurisdictions in Missouri (the other being Ozark) to receive funding from philanthropist Eli Broad calling for innovative community redevelopment around riverfront neighborhoods adjacent to Interstate 44 known as "Broadwalk". This program aimed at introducing new ideas about street design & transportation systems which could help revitalize these areas while creating opportunities for small businesses and housing developments

Jefferson City is the capital of the U.S. state of Missouri and is located in Clay County, on the I-55 beltway between St. Louis and Kansas City. The population was 30,813 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Missouri. The city was founded by a group of entrepreneurs led by James K. Polk in 1846 as a trading post on the confluence of the Illinois andMissouri rivers. The name Jefferson City originated from General Andrew Jackson's visit to this site during his campaign for president in 1844. The first courthouse in Jefferson City was built by local builder John Sibley in 1851; it served as the county seat until 1864 when it was moved to Marshalltown, Iowa due to its strategic location on both banks of the river that connected those two towns. After becoming an important center for trade and commerce, Jefferson City grew rapidly during its early years; brickyards were erected and sawmills began operating within minutes of one another throughout town streetsides. By 1860, more than 200 businesses had been established within three blocks of downtown Jeffcoville proper, making it one of America's most vibrant commercial districts before widespread railroad construction destroyed much of that business activity during the late 19th century.[1] In 1898, Congress passed an act designating Missouri as a "dry" state; this action helped spur development around Columbia (then called "River Hills"), which became known nationally for its high-quality dry wines[2]. In 1906–07, Mayor James Kapp established what would become one of America's earliest municipally owned corporations—the first municipally Owned Corporation in America—in order to promote economic development through promotion and marketing activities including land purchases and infrastructure construction projects such as a new water system and expressway connecting Columbia with other nearby cities.[3] During World War II, Jefferson City played an instrumental role in providing materiel support to American forces stationed abroad; many large businesses closed their doors after war ended but did not permanently lose their competitive edge because they continued operation under various partnerships with government agencies or private industry later on.[4] With population growth continuing into the 21st century,[5], Jefferson City has emerged as one of Mo
