In 1857, Kansas became a U.S.–Mexico border state with Jefferson City as its capital; however, it remained an independent city until 1907 when it merged into St. Louis County.[2] Jefferson City has experienced numerous surges in population over time due to its location near two large metropolitan areas: Saint Louis and Kansas City – both ranked among America's fastest-growing cities during their respective waves of growth in the early 21st century (2001-2010). Today, downtown Jefferson City retains much its historical flavor thanks to its mix of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture dating back to 1862,[3] Craftsman bungalows dated back to 1915,[4] and Gothic Revival buildings erected between 1928 and 1934 by local builder Wirt Hargrave[5]. Many businesses have closed or relocated since then but some notable survivors include Jardine’s Sporting Goods (closed 2006), Ferguson’s Grocery (closed 2009), Borders Books & Video (closed 2013) and Renaissance Technologies LLC (closed 2016).[6][7][8][9][10]
