On October 22, 1800, Jefferson City was named after George Washington's Vice President James Keneally Jefferson having been recommended for appointment by General John Starkweather commanding Federal troops at Cairo during that general's ill-fated campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte On November 1st 1800 Wm Biddle organized a company known as Company C & H which erected a log stockade around what is now downtown Jeffersontown just south of present day Beech Ave #2 Company C disbanded on December 10th 1800 due to lack funds but its members continued to build fortifications until March 4th 1801 when they finally abandoned their efforts after being outbid for land by Simon Cameron and other backers Pioneer developed some farmland southeast of town beginning about 1840 but it reverted back to forested acreage until 1983 when development began increasing northeastward along I-70W Base Line In addition to numerous manufacturing facilities including one belonging to Ford Motor Company which manufactured vehicles until 1978 and another belonging to Monsanto Co., Inc., one large entertainment complex known as Regal theaters located across I-70W from town began operations starting with repertory theater presentations through 1924 followed by live performances thru 1959* before shutting down totally* many small businesses also locate within easy reach such as convenience stores music stores pizza places etc.* although most have since closed or relocated elsewhere* several restaurants still remain however none quite original like Old Hickory Tavern which operated continuously inside courthouseUntil it closed circa 1990* Although there has been some redevelopment taking place recent years including plans for an arena/park adjacent to downtown Jeffersontown mayor Denny Jordan has said he does not believe there will be any major commercial developments anytime soon because residents want more housing density closer to jobs rather than further away* In spite of this negative trend several high profile businesses have recently opened up such as Live Nation Entertainment Group LLCs former headlining amphitheater Opryland stadium formerly home of tobacco giant Reynolds American Incorporated (*see below*) Plus several smaller clusters such as apartments/condos dotting Capitol Parkette between First Street South and Eighth Street North Also see: Downtown Development Agreement article

Jefferson City is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, located on the confluence of the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. The population was 53,594 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from James K. Polk, who served as president from 1876 to 1881 and had Jefferson City as his presidential home during that time. The first European visitors to what is now Jefferson City were French traders in 1664, who named it "Ile de la Salle." In 1763, France ceded Louisiana to Spain; however, Spanish officials continued to use Ile de la Salle for their headquarters until 1795 when they moved to New Orleans. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Canada and sacked Quebec; this inspired Missouri Senator John Cushing (D-Jacksonville) to write a bill proposing that Jefferson City become the capital ofMissouri Territory. After receiving input from several commissioners appointed by governor Linn Hardeman (R), on July 10, 1813, Jackson signed legislation creating the territory with Jefferson City as its permanent capital. The city became an important transportation center due to its position along both Canandaigua Road and Ohio River crossings; it also attracted businessmen and politicians interested in developing the area into a major commercial center. By 1830, construction had begun on what would become known as "the Capitol," which was completed in 1830 and served as the main government building for much of west central Missouri until it was destroyed by fire in 1868. In 1840s significant growth occurred due to steamboat traffic on both rivers; this led to increased development around downtown including brick buildings dating back to the early 19th century being erected along Canandaigua Road near where Union Station currently stands. During this time too many famous people lived or visited here: such as Ulysses S Grant (1814-1885), Woodrow Wilson (1902-1924), Fenton Hayes Hammond (1872-1952), Julius Caesar Borchardt (1853-1928). It wasn't until after World War II did downtown businesses start growing again thanks in part to Interstate 44!
